Rock That Uke in Asheville, NC!

November 11, 2004

Photos and captions (mostly) by Don Talley. Thanks, Don! Thanks also to Whose That? Records of Asheville, purveyors of fine ukulele music since 2002. Also performing in the concert, but undocumented due to camera failure was Flapper Extraordinaire (and Lin Llewellyn associate) Lauren Thompson of Sweet Mama T and her Red Hot Sugar Babies.

...many of whom brought their own ukes.

Foreground: the Rock That Uke Commemorative Ukulele. Backgound: a projected King Kukulele joins a Hula Cats jam.

The Hula Cats (Jason Krekel, Lin Llewellyn, Ami Worthen and Scott Sharpe) specialize in the lilting musical strains of Hawaii.

Lin Llewellyn and Ami Worthen of The Hula Cats are driving forces behind Asheville's uke scene. Lin was one of the area's first musicians to turn on to the Power of Uke. She regularly attends the Uke Expos.

Hula expert and teacher Destini demonstrates her art to the music of the Hula Cats.

Reese Gray and Jason Krekel perform a uke duet. Reese and Jason are members of several bands including the Firecracker Jazz Band.

John Herman and Meredith McIntosh show that the uke is a fine instrument for old-time Appalachian stringband music. Here they play The Girl with the Hair all Down Behind.

Greg Torzillo plays a beautiful Hawaiian song on his barrie uke.

The multi-talented multi-instrumentalist Jason shows why the slide whistle and the 'lectric geetar are perfect playmates for the ukulele.

Ken Cope performs George Formby tune Lancashire Torreador on banjo uke.

Rodney Sutton shows why banjo uke is also great for country songs.

Reese Gray lets loose on a solo.

Reese also plays the keyboard for the Asylum Street Spankers.

Woody Wood tickles the mahogany.

This is the one pic that Ami took. We're told it's of RTU co-director Sean.
